The Asparagus Bundle
.
Watching the evolution of the asparagus fields tucked next to the vineyards here is a year-long progression. One spring morning, the long, domed, barren dirt rows of the field are suddenly dotted with spikes of new asparagus, wildly pointing to very corner of the sky. Spring has come again and they reach for it! The farmers harvest them every day for a few sacred weeks, the crop that paves the road under the gates of the new bountiful season. Then one day, the cherries or apricots arrive in the markets and we forget the green stalks that just finished for another year. Now the fields jump at the freedom and send up tall, frothy stems to open wide, drinking in the summer sun and then the still-hot early autumn days. By the end of autumn the green froth has turned to golden frills. The rest season. But come the new year, the fields will be cleared to reveal once more the barren rows of dirt, waiting for that spring morning, that isn't so long off now.
