Even for the figs, it has been a difficult summer. One wild fig I have been checking on has lost all its fruit and most of its leaves on the sunniest side. But in the shadier places, and perhaps where their roots go down to damper ground, there are still little green orbs on the branches swelling day by day to the late summer harvest. And in many places, blackberries brambles like wicked jewels cascade their thorny stems down through the broad, vanilla-scented fig leaves and around the growing fruit. A stunning dance of the wild.
