Day 7 - A Branch of Orchard Plums and Friends
Today was hard. We are going into yet another week of high 90 temperatures - low 100s even for the next two days - and after 4 weeks of this with no variation, I am accumulating fatigue bordering on despair. Most thoughts feel hazy and muddled. To be honest, summer is my least favorite season. I have never dealt well with heat. But I also think that is why this project is such an interesting dialogue: finding what I can love about the season.
When no story came this morning, I went to the garden to find one. I clipped our first zucchini of the year and watched a butterfly hungrily tend to the artichokes that have escaped up gardeners and gone to flower. The sun was without pity but eventually in the wanders I came to a plum tree, its little yellow-green plums camouflaged under its leaves. How elegant the leaves, how perfectly formed the fruit.I snipped a branch and headed back to the studio thinking of the butterfly.
When I got there, earwigs spilled from the clipped artichokes I had brought back and a frightened crab spider scuttled from the plum branch. And what struck me was that despite the punishing heat of the day, the stems and leaves and branches were far from quiet. And the plum branch's story could not really be told without its friends.
