Day 9 - Cardoons
I saw the artichokes in my neighbor’s garden: tall, violet, and covered in contented bees, butterflies, ants, and earwigs. Their form was hypnotizing: goblets of forbidding spikes offering up tufts of almost feathery petals.
I asked my neighbor if I might have a few of his artichoke flowers for a composition. Oh yes, he said, but they are not artichokes, they are cardoons. Cardoons! I knew nothing about them except pale bundles of leaves I sometimes see at the market. But what an evocative name.
They came home with me and I now I have started to learn their story. This is how you come to know that plants around you: find one, fall in love, and learn who it is. One at a time, and the world reopens to us.
In many places, all we remember now is the artichoke. But its wild cousin the cardoon graced ancient tables in Greece, Rome, and Persia and European tables through the medieval period, even in colonial America.
