Day 20 - Prunus persica var. nucipersica
The fruit of the Prunus persica var. nucipersica, the nectarine, is the same species as the peach. While the name 'peach' and its Latin name stem from a Roman belief that what they called the 'Persian apple' originated in Persia, peaches were first domesticated and cultivated during the Neolithic period in China. The first mention of the nectarine, meaning nectar-like, in English however dates to the very beginning of the 17th century but the 'hairless peach' may well be older than that. It is, no matter its story, a jewel of the summer.
